March 2013
We want more men!
At Melbourne Aesthetic Health Care, we’ve decided to make March all
about men. While women’s skin health is often a topic of discussion, men’s skin
health tends to fall by the wayside. But healthy skin should be for everyone.
We believe in a duty of care to all skins—regardless of gender—and that’s why,
this month, we’re focusing on skincare concerns, treatments and products for
men.
The difference between men
and women
When it comes to skin there are four main ways in which men differ
from women:
•
Thickness – Higher levels of
testosterone mean men’s skin has denser collagen fibre networks, slowing the
appearance of aging. Unfortunately, this can lead some men to neglect skincare,
leading to more damage over time.
•
Oil production – Oil production is also
affected by higher testosterone levels, with males producing more oil than
females. Although this oil acts as a natural moisturiser, it also makes men
more susceptible to acne, especially when combined with larger pores.
•
Hair growth – Once again, testosterone
is behind this difference. Shaving can cause skin problems including rashes,
irritation and ingrown hairs.
•
Exposure – Many men are employed in
professions that entail harsh environmental conditions. Extended periods of sun
exposure without protection can quickly damage the skin.
Caring for your skin
There are plenty of simple things men can do to take better care of their
skin.
•
Understand skin type – Is the skin oily or dry? Prone to
blackheads? Does it see a lot of sun? There is no such thing as
‘one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to skincare. Using products specifically
prescribed for a particular skin type can mean the difference between a rough,
blemished complexion and clear, smooth skin.
•
Shave smart – Reduce shaving irritation by shaving in the same direction as hair
growth. For a closer shave, shaving product should be reapplied before shaving again,
this time going against the growth.
•
Be kind – Shaving products that are high
in soothing and hydrating ingredients are best for men’s skin. Products
commonly found in supermarkets and chemists often contain harsh ingredients
that irritate the skin, like alcohol.

Special offer
For a lot of men, skincare amounts to a splash of warm water in the
shower and a dash of shaving cream to help the razor along. Seeing a dermal
therapist is seen as something women do to pamper themselves. Even men who do
use skincare products may believe that visiting a skincare specialist is of no
use to them. But at Melbourne Aesthetic Health Care, we know that’s completely
untrue! There’s so much we can do for men’s skin health—we just need to get
them into the clinic.
If you know a gentleman who deserves amazing skin, now is the time
to refer him to Melbourne Aesthetic Health Care for a little skin magic. During
March, if you refer a male friend* to us and their visit results in the sale of
a treatment or product, we’ll make your next chemical peeling treatment FREE to
the value of $120.
