April 2013

Let’s get back to basics
This month at Melbourne Aesthetic Health Care, it’s all about getting back to basics:

Cleansing. Toning. Moisturising.

You might not think about them very much but these three steps are the foundations of healthy skin. As well as cleaning and rehydrating the skin, cleansing, toning and moisturising prepare your skin for the application of secondary skincare products, treatments and cosmetics. If you scrimp on the basics, the initial results you see from applying serums, skincare treatments and cosmetics might look great at first, but the results will quickly dissipate or may not work as effectively as they should. Just like priming a canvas for a beautiful painting, you need to prepare your skin to create and protect a beautiful complexion.

You know how it is...
It’s late, you’re tired and all you want to do is go to bed. You drag yourself to the bathroom, grab a dollop of cleanser, swipe it on your face and follow up with a brief splash of cold water. You think about using toner. You decide to skip it and go straight to your anti-ageing serum before slathering on your moisturiser. After all, the serum is the product doing most of the work, right?

But what you may not realise is that by taking shortcuts on the basic steps of your skincare routine, that anti-ageing serum—and any skincare treatments you might undergo—won’t have the chance to reach its optimum performance.

Skincare 101
It would be a shame to let all that beautiful skin potential go to waste, so let’s revisit the basic cleanse, tone, and moisturise routine to make sure your skin is getting the love it deserves.

Cleanse To make the most of your cleanser, start by washing your hands. Not only is it hygienic but it allows your cleanser to focus on the dirt and oil on your face, not on your hands. Blend the prescribed amount of cleanser with some water and massage into your skin, focusing on any areas that are rougher in texture or feel like they need extra cleansing. Continue for at least 60 seconds before rinsing thoroughly with cool to tepid water.

If you’ve been wearing makeup, repeat the cleansing process again before gently towel drying your skin.

Tone – Make the most of your toner by saturating a flat, round cotton pad with water and squeezing out the excess before applying the prescribed amount of toner. By adding water first, the cotton pad will absorb less of your toner, meaning more toner makes it onto your skin. Wipe the cotton pad across your face, focusing on any areas that are rougher in texture or feel like they need some extra care.

Moisturise – Apply moisturiser to skin that is still slightly damp. This assists the moisturiser in penetrating the skin while also allowing the product to glide more easily across the skin’s surface, meaning less product is required.

Using the right products
Now that you’ve taken a refresher course on basic skincare, now is the time to ask yourself whether you have the right tools for the job. Correct technique can only take you so far if you aren’t using the right cleanser, toner and moisturiser to begin with.
